Through the coaching process, Terry Bate found that as a volunteer he learned more about himself than he expected. In addition to shepherding participants through the IMPACT program and seeing them change the course of their lives, he also learned new things from the Money & Me and Boundaries classes which he has applied to his life as well.
Just over two years ago Terry learned about the Love INC IMPACT program when Kathryn Roy, Love INC’s Executive Director, spoke during his church’s mission week. He was at a point in his life when he was looking for ways to serve and after he attended an IMPACT Information Session decided to make the move and join the IMPACT team.
IMPACT is an acronym for Invest relationally, Meet weekly, Pray continually, Affirm regularly, Coach purposefully and Train intentionally. The program represents Love INC’s model of addressing the comprehensive needs of the individual through authentic relationship building.
Terry has learned a lot, he said, from the people he has coached so far. He enjoyed the process of learning more about his participants and their needs and especially enjoyed the work involved in mapping out a specific plan to transform their lives. Seeing progress made is a special highlight. “Any participant has to be willing to commit to putting in the work needed to enable changes in their life approach,” commented Terry, “but once they do there is literally nothing they can’t achieve.”
There is a real sense of community at the IMPACT campus,” Terry said. ” You can expect to make friends and find lots of support, encouragement and prayer.”
One of the highlights for Terry came when one of the people he was coaching was able to pay off all their major credit cards. More importantly, she made the decision to be baptized and invited him to be with her family as she was baptized, he considered this to be a very special blessing.
If you are considering volunteering with the IMPACT program, there are many ways to get involved. “Life coaches, class leaders, facilitators, discussion group leaders, meal preparers and childcare helpers all make the program work and help make the positive change in people’s lives possible” commented Terry.
Terry’s advice for participants is to come with the expectation of learning things that will change your life in the best way. Also, expect to be supported, loved, prayed for and challenged as you put in the work needed to make positive changes.
Terry’s experience with IMPACT has been so positive that he has recently accepted a permanent position as IMPACT Director. He has seen firsthand how the IMPACT program helps people improve their lives and excited to see what the future holds.
